Leicester Cathedral Choir sang at St. Peter’s Church for a full Choral Evensong on Sunday 2nd July to mark the Festival of St. Petertide and to close a wonderful weekend of flowers, cakes and smiles.
The service was lead by Canon Philip Norwood, a longtime friend of our local churches. Canon Philip has been part of our spiritual life, preaching and leading worship over the years at Church, Tur and more recently Thorpe Langton. His voice was a joy to hear again.
Flower Festival
Our flower arranging team and many other volunteers, friends and family brought flowers and accessories to fill the church with summer!
From Wimbledon to the Tour de France, the seaside to the countryside, afternoon teas, garden to allotment, wildlife, bees and birds – All aspects of summer life were reflected in the displays. The displays took us from home to abroad, even to the gardens of South Africa – A world trip in flowers!
It was amazing! Incredible ingenuity and imagination in every part of the church.
Fundraising THANK YOU
This weekend event raised over £1500 towards the Tower Project. We were overwhelmed by the generosity in these difficult times. It was a great coming together of our parishes and village community to decorate and celebrate and give thanks.
Enjoy a few memories here, but please send your photos too – We would love to add them to the website gallery! You can send them to us on our Facebook page or send them by email or for large files/videos use We Transfer to info@churchlangton.org.uk
Creativity Unwrapped at St. Peter’s, Church Langton LE16 7SZ Discover more as Heritage Open Days celebrates the creativity in this beautiful church http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk
10th & 17th September 2023
A variety of craft activities and tours of the church, based on the theme of creativity, will be available for all the family. On two consecutive Sundays on 10th and 17th September, St. Peter’s, Church Langton, Market Harborough, will be providing children’s activities at 1.15 to 2.00pm and a guided tour from 2.00 – 3.00pm, highlighting the creative aspect of this wonderful church. St. Peter’s claim to fame is that it was the first parish church in the country to hold a performance of Handel’s Messiah. This free event is an opportunity to find out more about this momentous occasion and is not to be missed.
Previously only performed in theatres, in 1759 the Reverend William Hanbury staged this performance. Find out more about this momentous day. See the original organ casing and keyboard as well as carved medieval bosses, corbels and a figurine, a 17th century font cover and tomb effigy, Minton floor tiles, elaborate Victorian wood carving, Reid’s alabaster reredos carving of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’, stained glass that has fine examples of Pre Raphaelite designs and quality Victorian glass and decorative Swithland slate headstones including what is said to be the best gravestone image in Leicestershire. Taking inspiration from all this creativity children will be able to make their own tissue paper-stained glass windows, grave rubbings, and tile designs as well as a ‘creativity’ hunt.
St. Peter’s tall 14th century tower is an imposing landmark in the rolling hills of South Leicestershire. This magnificent Grade 2* church is just off the A6 on the B6047. Church Langton is on the Leicestershire Round with several other footpaths leading to the village and along with the surrounding Langtons has one of three pleasant country pubs offering Sunday lunch.
Rector William Hanbury organised the first performance of Handel’s Messiah in a Parish Church in England in St Peter’s on 27th September 1759.
Victorian renovations resulted in the elaborate carvings on the pews and pulpit and a reredos in the chancel.
No wheelchair access, uneven ground in churchyard.

Ride + Stride is the single largest source of income for many Historic Churches Trusts enabling them to make Grants to places of Christian worship. Taking place on the second Saturday of September the funds raised can be split between the nominated Trust and the participants chosen church or chapel.
As ever Ride+Stride is a wonderful way to enjoy getting out and about safely as well as raising much-needed funds to support Grant applications from churches and chapels across the county.
St Peter’s is delighted to be taking part again this year – so look forward to welcoming you on foot, bike or hoof! If you are a bicycle or horse rider or a walker (Shanks’s pony?!), you would be most welcome to join this lovely event, which benefits so many churches locally and around the country.
