Remembrance Sunday 2025

Remembering 80 years on from the end of World War II

The annual service of Remembrance was held on Remembrance Sunday with over 60 people, including youngsters with their families attending.

Service led by Rev Martin Hathaway followed the Royal British Legion service with readings from the Old and New Testament. In Martin’s address, he considered the word ‘Remember’ its meaning. He reminded us that this year marks a special anniversary, 80 years since the end of World War II – and that many of the survivors of that conflict are passing on. He felt it was even more important than ever to hear their stories while we can.

The Act of Remembrance took place in the Lady Chapel, which has become St Peter’s informal area for remembrance. The names of the fallen from The Langtons were read here and the wreaths for each village memorial blessed.

The Last Post played and followed by the two-minute silence. Reveille sounded to mark the closing part of the service.

After the blessings at the conclusion of the service, the congregation processed to the Village Green to lay Church Langton’s wreath.

The churchwardens from Tur and Thorpe Langton respectively, took their wreaths home to lay on their village memorials.

All proceeds from this service will be forwarded on behalf of the Langtons to support Harborough’s branch of the Royal British Legion.

Church Langton Celebrates Richard Burton

With the 100 th anniversary of Richard Burton’s birth coming up on 10th November it seemed appropriate to show the film “Mr. Burton”.

MR. BURTON tells the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins. The latter dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline.

Mr. Burton recognized the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father. Actor Burton would go on to be nominated for seven Oscars.

About Mosaic

Mosaic are a group of five voices who have sung together for many years. The group of singers have performed in churches all over the East Midlands, notably at Seagrave, Kings Bromley, Maidwell and Nottingham. This is their first appearance at St Peter’s in Churhc Langton and we look forward to hearing their beautiful song.

Their programme covers a wide range of music from polyphony and madrigals and Tudor anthems through to folk and modern arrangements of popular songs.

And if you’re curious about ‘polyphony’, it is a type of musical texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody, as opposed to a musical texture with just one voice or a texture with one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords… So in many ways, a weaving of pattern in sound, which in visual terms, might be described as a mosaic… Should be a lovely experience.

We look forward to welcoming Mosaic and you to St Peter’s for a unique finale to this Summer Sunday Concert season.
